We emigrated to the Northeast cost of Brazil in April 2007.
The fact that Cindy was 3 months pregnant made the whole
adventure even more exciting.
For quite some time we were thinking of leaving Holland
because of the obvious reasons. The predominantly rainy
climate, stress, daily traffic jams, a patronizing society and
government that tell you what to do all the time while they
keep spending your hard earned tax money etc, etc, etc.
Three years earlier we were in Brazil for a holiday. In the
state of Ceara we rented a house near Iguape. It was only
22 miles from Fortaleza Airport. One day during a buggytour
along the beach we passed a beautiful oceanfront
beachvilla. There was a big sign on the villa that said
"oceanviewvilla-forsale" so we were instantly triggered. We
bought this beautiful beachhouse for various reasons. A
second home in Brazil sounded like a dream come true.
Back in 2004 the realestate prices as well as the exchange
rates were very good.
Owning a piece of oceanfront property in a climate this nice
also sounded like a smart investment. At that time we
weren't thinking of emigrating so most of all we bought this
beautiful place as a holiday hide out. Every time we
returned to Iguape to spend our holiday there it really felt
like coming home. During our many long walks along the
beach we often asked ourselves “why should we even bother going to go back to Holland
??”. Finally after three years of holidays in Brazil, dreaming
about a future there, and quite a lot of doubts we made a
decision. We decided to sell our house in Holland, quit both
our jobs, say goodbye to family and friends, pack our bags
and set sail for sunny Iguape, Brazil. Everybody said we
were crazy emigrating to an uncertain future while
expecting our first baby but our desire for new adventures
was stronger than the fear of the unknown. We feel that
you it is better to have regrets about something you have
done, than regret having done nothing.
